Begun in 1898 by several young men who wanted to compete, but were too young to enter in the Maryland Hunt Cup, the Grand National Steeplechase became a standard in Maryland Timber Racing. In 2011, the Grand National Steeplechase celebrates its 109th running.
This event has been a testing ground for the country's best timber horses for over fifty years. With more timber horses in training than ever before and an extremely competitive group of junior riders, this promises to be a great day of sport.
On October 30th, 1920, Renowned American sportsman, Foxhall P. Keene, initiated a race over timber at his Monkton, Maryland home, Foxhall Farm. Keene's intent was to encourage participation in the sport.
